When you’re ready to downsize from a home to an apartment, the idea of downsizing can feel overwhelming. Sorting through decades of family history and possessions can be a major challenge. How do you decide what stays and what goes? Here is a checklist to help you plan and make that transition as smooth as possible.
Make a list of everything you don’t love or need so you can start selling or giving it away. Also, make sure you have plenty of packing materials like boxes, sharpies, Ziploc bags and packing tape.
Measure Your Space
Get measurements of your new space or obtain a floor plan and compare the space to your current home. This will help you determine how much you can keep and take with you to your new home. Draw a floor chart to plan out how your furniture will fit and plan accordingly.
Sort Your Things
Start one room at a time and with the least impactful room first. Use stickers to label your belongings and put each of your items into four categories: Keep, Sell, Donate, Recycle/Trash. Keep track of your decisions in a notebook or take pictures if you need help staying organized while you are sorting. Shred, toss or give away obvious items and offer special items to family members.
