Northern Colorado is a great place to live at any time of year, but in the autumn, it’s particularly great. Beyond all the cultural, recreational and outdoor activities residents enjoy, they also enjoy a variety of Northern Colorado fall festivals.
Elk Fest, Estes Park
Thanks to its proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park is known as a wildlife-spotting hotspot. To coincide with the elk rut and celebrate the animals that literally wander through the center of town, Estes Park hosts Elk Fest in late September, featuring elk seminars, Native American culture and elk-inspired crafts.
The classic Oktober fest gets a decidedly Fort Collins spin each year at Fortober Fest. This family-friendly celebration features live music, German-themed food, and, of course, beer. Because it’s in Fort Collins, the emphasis is on local brew.
Colorado State University Homecoming
You don’t need to be an alumnus to enjoy Colorado State University’s Homecoming festival. The weekend-long celebration’s highlights include a homecoming parade through Fort Collins, a bonfire with fireworks, a 5K run/walk and, of course, a football game.
Civil War Weekend
Relive history as re-enactments at Greeley’s Centennial Village Museum recreate Civil War-era military drills, and simulated battles at Civil War Weekend. Actors take the roles of soldiers, blacksmiths and printers, as a civil war campsite springs up on the museum’s grounds. Grab a bite from a chuck wagon on site and interact with facilitators.
Community Reads Programs
Fall is a great time to be an avid (or casual) reader in Northern Colorado, as Loveland and Fort Collins’ community reads programs bring world-class authors to speak, with a pair of Pulitzer prizewinners visiting the region. Loveland Loves to Read brings Anthony Doer to Thompson Valley High School Sept. 22; tickets start at $22. Fort Collins Reads brings Jennifer Egan to Hilton Fort Collins Nov. 4; tickets start at $10.
Of course, Northern Colorado fall festivals are just a sliver of the regional activities to enjoy. Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley and Windsor are chock full of events year round, making 55 Resort Apartments at Water Valley an ideal place to spend your retirement – or the years leading up to it.
